3 Easy Ways to Build a Healthy Business Culture

Human connectivity is the source of energy. If you want a strong culture that thrives on healthy energy, then you need to make sure that everyone in your business can connect to each other in healthy, meaningful ways. Here are three easy ways to build a healthy business culture.

1. Put away the technology, and don’t use technology to intentionally avoid human contact. Put away the laptop and be part of the meeting. Don’t pretend you’re a telecommuter when you’re actually in the building. Unless it’s an absolute emergency, don’t check texts or e-mails or answer the phone while you’re having a conversation with another person. All of these scenarios are rude, and become obstacles in building relationships and energetically connecting with other people.

2. Have scheduled conversations frequently with all the people you work with, including one-on-one conversations with the business leader at least once a week. Require people to have phone conversations, meet in person whenever possible, and get together as a team. This does not, in any way, imply that you remove your results-only work environment. This policy simply states that human contact needs to be made a priority for everyone when at all possible.

3. Ask people questions, seek to understand their opinions, and physically show people that you care—this message is specifically for the leaders of the business. The only way you will ever build a trusting relationship with your team is if you actually care about the people who are on your team. Caring means that you ask them questions about them personally— not just about work-related topics. Get to know everyone personally. Be people’s friend. Yes, you can be someone’s friend and leader at the same time. Gone are the days when you had to separate yourself from everyone once you became a leader. In fact, if you separate yourself you are fueling the business with negative energy, because healthy energy can only exist when healthy relationships exist.
