Take Me Beyond My Current Limitations

Many years ago, I found myself standing on the edge of a crane at a county fair in Iowa. Somehow, I thought it was a good idea to put on a harness, be taken up into the air a few hundred feet, and jump head first toward a giant blow up mat with the outline of a dead body staring at me on the way down.

I remember standing there ready to jump. Aside from the outline of the dead body, I saw hundreds of tiny heads looking up at me waiting for me to take the plunge. As I leaned over the edge I heard the guy in the crane say, “On the count of three let go. 1, 2, 3!” I said, “Nope!”

This guy was amazingly patient. He said, “Ok. Let’s try this again. This time, turn around and simply allow yourself to fall backwards on the count of three. 1, 2, 3!” I said, “No way!” Then petrified, I walked away from the edge to where my friend was standing.

My friend said, “Gina, you don’t have to jump if you don’t want to. It’s totally up to you.”

In that moment of choice, something magical happened. I just looked at my friend and said, “Nope.” Then I took a leap to the edge like I was on a high dive, and literally did a swan dive off the platform into the air! Scared to death one minute; the next minute I’m free falling head first.

I had never felt such freedom. Little did I know how life changing that jump would be.

Over the last 20-years I have found myself hanging over the edge of that crane hundreds of times. When I was deciding on whether to get a divorce, walk away from a secure job to start my business, have a baby, go to grad school, walk away from toxic relationships…the list goes on and on. And every time I’m faced with that “big something” that terrifies me, I remember the moment when I took a leap of faith and did a swan dive off the crane that evening in Iowa—and I remember how good it felt after I jumped.

I also remember how many times it took me to jump and why I finally jumped. That memory allows me to give myself a little grace and be patient with my own internal process as I navigate life. It also reminds me that I always have choice. That no matter how restrictive life may feel in the moment, there’s always an alternative. If one choice creates a feeling of restriction or limitation there’s always another option that will allow me to feel free.

For me, it’s not a matter of if I’ll jump; but rather, when I’ll jump. It may take me three tries before gathering enough courage to take the plunge, and that plunge may be in a completely different direction than I originally thought, but I will jump. And I’ll inevitably jump because I know how good it feels to be on the other side and free.

What are you waiting for? Jump.

In the Streets of Sofia, Bulgaria

I’m sitting in the streets of Sofia, Bulgaria. A European city filled with hidden gems and almost a feel of Barcelona, Spain…but not quite.

This morning I’m finding refuge and laughter in one place where everyone speaks a universal language and shares the same love for a modern vice…Starbucks! I adore immersing myself in foreign cultures, but for whatever reason this Cafe Americano tastes so good.

My lesson this morning is unity through commonality. It doesn’t matter where you are, you can always find commonality with the person or people that surround you. You just have to stop and get curious to find it; when you do unity is inevitable (if even for just a moment).

Today, get curious about the people around you, and find refuge and laughter in the one commonality you share. You may be surprised on how this moment of unity can heal even the most tumultuous relationships.

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

I was at a wedding reception tonight for friends of mine who have been together for a decade. A reminder of the gifts patience provides to those willing to learn the practice. Each of our desires is like a piece of fruit; the longer you wait the sweeter the experience when it’s ready to enjoy. When it comes to the things our hearts desire most, the magic comes in our ability to relish in the process of anticipation so when it finally arrives we cherish the moment and hold gratitude for its existence.

Are You the 20% Who Will Be Happy?

Life lessons have the ability to shape you into the best image of yourself–if you allow the transformation to happen. There’s always choice. Become the butterfly and experience happiness or fight the current in order to stay status quo. The choice is always yours….

20% of you reading this blog will choose to become the butterfly; clearly understanding that flying is so much faster than trying to walk everywhere you want to go. Why only 20%? In order to fly you need to lighten your load. You can’t take flight while trying to carry baggage that weighs more than your wings.

Baggage comes in the form of emotional suffering: loneliness, resentment, inability to forgive, EGO, unresolved anger and sadness just to name a few. The older the baggage the heavier the weight–even a small little micro experience of unresolved hurt can harden and turn into a ton of bricks.

20% of you will crush the bricks! You’ll take out your sledge-hammer, and with all your might, no matter how much work it takes, you’ll turn every brick into powder until all the heaviness simply blows away in the wind. And then poof! You take flight.

Today is simply reflection…

Are you one of the 20%?

Together We Stand Divided We Fall

Emotions are running high across the nation today, and the divide among US citizens is creating a surplus of anxiety, frustration, anger or worse apathy. The presidential election is in full force and soon the greatest country in the world will have a new president to carry us forward.

Tomorrow morning some of you will wake up inspired and excited for the future. Some of you will wake up scared and worried about what the next four years will bring. And Some of you have already turned apathetic to the system, our nation and your role as a U.S. Citizen. Tomorrow, we face what could potentially be the greatest divide our generation has ever experienced.

In contrast, last week our nation experienced one of the greatest unifiers in history. The Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series and brought together millions of people for the 7th largest peace gathering this world has ever seen. The Cub’s rally and parade brought together Chicago Cub fans and Cleveland Indian fans alike. The crowd of 5 million was filled with all nationalities, value systems, political beliefs and spiritual preferences. Everyone came together in peace and their collective energy was strong enough to rise above our man-made differences to create an unbreakable force of love. A powerful example for us all to reflect on as we enter into this election.

Together we stand divided we fall. Tomorrow we are faced with a choice. Do we stand united; putting aside our man-made differences so that together The Land of the Brave can create a better world for generations to come? Or, do we divide and fall?

Tomorrow my hope is that you exercise compassion, walk in the way of kindness and choose to unite in peace with your neighbor, your friends and your loved ones. May we all remember that it’s our collective actions and words that will blaze the trail forward and create a nation admired by all.

Dream Big; Set Yourself Free

dream-big-657x360

Have you forgotten your dream?

If you could choose a new career or way of life that made your heart sing, what would it be? Dream big. Skies the limit. And money is no object. What would your heart want you to do?

As a child, the world was your oyster. Everything was possible, and endless possibilities were everywhere. Most of the time you didn’t even wait for someone to tell you whether you were right or wrong–you just went for it. The game of make-believe turned your world into a haven of creative bliss. One day you were a doctor and the next a rock star, dancer or sea captain. Every moment brought a new adventure that changed your world and made your heart sing. Pure freedom fueled days of laughter, a light spirit and a smile as big as could be.

Then you grew up. Imagination and creativity became structured. And structure put you into a box crafted by societal expectations. Money became a driving force, and “things” became a model of joy and happiness. Exhaustion replaced freedom, and freedom became heavy—noted only to describe rights, laws and rules. Rules, silent or publicly displayed, that were created to provide more structure and direction as to how you should live and behave. And one day you turned around and realized you forgot what your heart actually wanted to be.

It’s time for a personal revolution. You were born to create, imagine and be free. You were born into this world to live that big dream. You know the one….it never goes away. And as soulfully deep seeded as it may be, in moments of silence it awakens inside of you and asks you to play. Are you listening? Or, are you still searching outside yourself for that “something” you think that will make you happy?

Today, do one thing that sets you free.
