Take Me Beyond My Current Limitations

Many years ago, I found myself standing on the edge of a crane at a county fair in Iowa. Somehow, I thought it was a good idea to put on a harness, be taken up into the air a few hundred feet, and jump head first toward a giant blow up mat with the outline of a dead body staring at me on the way down.

I remember standing there ready to jump. Aside from the outline of the dead body, I saw hundreds of tiny heads looking up at me waiting for me to take the plunge. As I leaned over the edge I heard the guy in the crane say, “On the count of three let go. 1, 2, 3!” I said, “Nope!”

This guy was amazingly patient. He said, “Ok. Let’s try this again. This time, turn around and simply allow yourself to fall backwards on the count of three. 1, 2, 3!” I said, “No way!” Then petrified, I walked away from the edge to where my friend was standing.

My friend said, “Gina, you don’t have to jump if you don’t want to. It’s totally up to you.”

In that moment of choice, something magical happened. I just looked at my friend and said, “Nope.” Then I took a leap to the edge like I was on a high dive, and literally did a swan dive off the platform into the air! Scared to death one minute; the next minute I’m free falling head first.

I had never felt such freedom. Little did I know how life changing that jump would be.

Over the last 20-years I have found myself hanging over the edge of that crane hundreds of times. When I was deciding on whether to get a divorce, walk away from a secure job to start my business, have a baby, go to grad school, walk away from toxic relationships…the list goes on and on. And every time I’m faced with that “big something” that terrifies me, I remember the moment when I took a leap of faith and did a swan dive off the crane that evening in Iowa—and I remember how good it felt after I jumped.

I also remember how many times it took me to jump and why I finally jumped. That memory allows me to give myself a little grace and be patient with my own internal process as I navigate life. It also reminds me that I always have choice. That no matter how restrictive life may feel in the moment, there’s always an alternative. If one choice creates a feeling of restriction or limitation there’s always another option that will allow me to feel free.

For me, it’s not a matter of if I’ll jump; but rather, when I’ll jump. It may take me three tries before gathering enough courage to take the plunge, and that plunge may be in a completely different direction than I originally thought, but I will jump. And I’ll inevitably jump because I know how good it feels to be on the other side and free.

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

I was at a wedding reception tonight for friends of mine who have been together for a decade. A reminder of the gifts patience provides to those willing to learn the practice. Each of our desires is like a piece of fruit; the longer you wait the sweeter the experience when it’s ready to enjoy. When it comes to the things our hearts desire most, the magic comes in our ability to relish in the process of anticipation so when it finally arrives we cherish the moment and hold gratitude for its existence.

Are You the 20% Who Will Be Happy?

Life lessons have the ability to shape you into the best image of yourself–if you allow the transformation to happen. There’s always choice. Become the butterfly and experience happiness or fight the current in order to stay status quo. The choice is always yours….

20% of you reading this blog will choose to become the butterfly; clearly understanding that flying is so much faster than trying to walk everywhere you want to go. Why only 20%? In order to fly you need to lighten your load. You can’t take flight while trying to carry baggage that weighs more than your wings.

Baggage comes in the form of emotional suffering: loneliness, resentment, inability to forgive, EGO, unresolved anger and sadness just to name a few. The older the baggage the heavier the weight–even a small little micro experience of unresolved hurt can harden and turn into a ton of bricks.

20% of you will crush the bricks! You’ll take out your sledge-hammer, and with all your might, no matter how much work it takes, you’ll turn every brick into powder until all the heaviness simply blows away in the wind. And then poof! You take flight.

The Benefits of Having a Positive Attitude

imagesI’m sure there some skeptics who will read this and probably not agree with me. However that’s great because these are the people that holds us back from reaching our goals. Otherwise referred to as the naysayers. There is so much we can benefit from having a positive attitude, not to mention the profound effects it has on our quality of life.  Some peoples attitude towards life is also a reflection about their attitudes towards themselves. There has even been scientific studies done proving that the benefit of have an optimistic or positive attitude contributes to many health challenges. Like cancer and health problems creating  personal joy on a day to day basis means we live happier and healthier.

When you think about gratitude it gives you a powerful influence on your outlook. No matter how bad things get focus on the small blessings. This helps you shift your thought process and focus in a positive direction. You will begin too worry less about anything you currently don’t have or want.

Choosing happiness and being happy is not about circumstances or any other uncontrollable forces. It’s about making a decision. Then making up your mind to be happy about the decision you have made, plus not dwelling on it.

Take a look at your view on problems. Instead of looking at them as problems view them as challenges. The definition of the word problem means:( something that is difficult to deal with: something that is a source of trouble, worry. difficulty in understanding something: a feeling of not liking or wanting to do something). If when you hear the word problem and your view is like this your energy is already drained before you make any attempt to repair what has happen. By substituting the word challenge here is what you hear:(a call or summons to engage in any contest, as of skill and strength.) Seeing an experience as a challenge will focus your attention on a positive outcome with very little effort.

As we go through life with many challenges and being pulled in many different directions we forget to stop and smell the roses as they say. We are always rushing to get to some place where we still have to get in line and wait again. We have to remember to embrace the journey we have taken to get where we are at today and reflect on life’s simple pleasures. Focusing on simple pleasures allows us to have a sense of balance in our life.

Surround yourself with optimistic people and their influence will feed your sense of optimism. The positive attitudes of people around you can be very powerful force for you and them. Try to list the things you are truly grateful for daily before going to bed each night. Then last but not least, minimize your exposure to negative influences around you. This could be friends family or even coworkers or simply stop watching, reading or listening to the news. You will find it to be much easier to be optimistic and focus on the positive things in you life. The Magic of Mango Pancakes

I have to tell you, I’ve been feeling a little blah the last few days. Maybe I’ve needed some sunshine, more sleep (don’t we all) or a mini vacation. Whatever the reason, all I know is that I’ve been dying for some inspiration. This morning I even woke up saying, “Come on Universe inject me with some kind of energy boost–PLEASE.”

Then around 10:00 am I drove past my favorite little Cuban restaurant Victor’s. The moment I saw this turquoise shack I immediately got a craving for their signature mango pancakes–a giant pancake filled with butter, syrup and mangos with a hot coffee to boot. Absolute heaven.

I walked in and was immediately welcomed by Cuban music, bright fruit plastic table cloths and over 55 years of graffiti all over the walls. I instantly found my body relax as I practically skipped to a table in the back corner. Suddenly I felt alive!

As I ate the pancake and drank my coffee I tried to recall my last personal adventure.  You know the kind. An adventure where you explore the world outside the “normal” routine of life. And my last adventure was months ago. It doesn’t matter how exciting a routine might be, any routine gets boring and has the power to zap energy when it goes on too long. That was my problem, I needed to shake things up and give my soul something different to look at–graffiti and magic mango pancakes did the trick.
